While they may not be the most glamorous aspect of feline companionship, hairballs are a common occurrence among cats. In this article, we will explore the causes, prevention, and management of hairballs, shedding light on this hairy topic for cat owners.

What are Hairballs?

Hairballs, medically known as trichobezoars, are formed when cats groom themselves by licking their fur. During the grooming process, cats ingest loose hairs, which accumulate in their digestive system over time. Hairballs are usually cylindrical in shape, with a sticky texture, and are expelled through vomiting.

Causes of Hairballs:

1. Self-Grooming: Cats are meticulous groomers and use their tongues as natural combs to clean their fur. While grooming, they inevitably swallow some of their loose hairs, which can accumulate in their stomachs.

2. Excessive Shedding: Certain cat breeds, such as Persians and Maine Coons, are prone to heavy shedding due to their long, dense fur. Excessive shedding increases the likelihood of hairballs.
